The Highway 68 to Hiwassee River section of Turtletown Creek in Polk County is 4.2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV-V section. The beautiful scenery of Tennessee and the water flowing gracefully down Turtletown Creek will make you feel great. The Highway 68 to Hiwassee River section is the only paddling section along Turtletown Creek. If you're coming from Athens it's
not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable
for an afternoon trip. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Whitewater paddling here in the Great Smoky Mountains is a great experience. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people.

hours of summer temperatures plunge down into the 60's. All through the winter highs are in the 40's while Turtletown Creek night low temperatures during the wintertime are in the 20's. Stone Pile Gap is next to Turtletown Creek and is positively a wonderful place to stop at; there
are pleasant places to discover along the Unicoi Mountain Trail. Just can't get enough of the Great Smoky Mountains. Don't leave Turtletown Creek without first going for a hike along the Unicoi Trail. A lot of rain falls at Turtletown Creek; most of the rain falls throughout March, and the driest of the months is October.
