The Highway 68 to Hiwassee River section of Turtletown Creek in Polk County is 4.2 miles long and has been rated as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. If you're coming from Athens it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. The beautiful scenery of Tennessee and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This is a pretty decent length section, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The nearby hotels are a bit away from
the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. There are no other sections to paddle along Turtletown Creek than the Highway 68 to Hiwassee
River section. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. The campgrounds here at Turtletown Creek are pretty good. The wild scenery of the Great Smoky Mountains is great. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so better not forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy.

and during summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's with temperatures at Turtletown Creek dipping down into the 20's during winter nights. Don't leave Turtletown Creek without first going for a hike along the Unicoi Trail, and while you're
here, you might as well go to Stone Pile Gap. Turtletown Creek is a wet place that gets much rainfall; during the month of March you get the most rain around here, and October is when it's the driest. But wait, there's more cool stuff to do in the Great Smoky Mountains. There are wonderful locations to discover along the Unicoi Mountain Trail.
