If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Tennessee you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so don't forget that rivers here are less forgiving. The FR to Hiawassee River section of Wolf Creek is 2.3 miles long and is a class IV+ section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The natural beauty of Polk County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. There are no other stretches to paddle along Wolf Creek than the FR to Hiawassee River stretch. No matter if you're
whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Athens, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some
time outdoors will have you coming back for more. This is a somewhat short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. The beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains is a great plus for this river. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The campgrounds here at Wolf Creek are pretty good.

Smoky Mountains. Hiking along the Unicoi Mountain Trail is nice fun. Summertime highs at Wolf Creek commonly tend to be in the 80's, and through the night it cools down to the 60's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 40's; nighttime lows during the winter for Wolf
Creek tend to be in the 20's. All the water falling down from the sky makes Wolf Creek a wet site; the month of March is the wettest with most of the rain, and October is the month with the least moisture. Wolf Creek is right by the Smith Mountain Trail, and if you're here why not stop at Stone Pile Gap.
