The put-in is not too far from Athens, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The scenic beauty of Tennessee and the water flowing gracefully down Wolf Creek make the trip here worthwhile. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. When you're paddling down a Great Smoky Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. The FR to Hiawassee River section of Wolf Creek in Polk
County is 2.3 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV+ section. There are no other sections to paddle along Wolf Creek than the FR to Hiawassee River section. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end
up sleeping in your car. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This is a somewhat short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over.
Briefly about the general area: For the period of the warm days of summer here at Wolf Creek, high temperatures mostly get into the 80's. Once the sun
is down it descends down to the 60's. High temperatures during the winter are normally in the 40's while Wolf Creek nighttime low temperatures during the winter are in the 20's. Since you're here at Wolf Creek why not pop by Stone Pile Gap, and Wolf Creek is right by the Smith
Mountain Trail. The high level of precipitation makes Wolf Creek a rather wet place; of all the months in a year March is the one with the most rain while October is usually the driest month. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Great Smoky Mountains. Hiking along the Unicoi Mountain Trail is splendid fun.
