Canyon Dam to Cypress Bend Park section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III(V) 22 miles
This is a fun river to kayak. Although some parts are very slow open water, there are usually plenty of tubers to keep it interesting. Me and mine really love this ride. The best put in is somewhere around the first crossing right above huaco springs rapids. From there, your next take out is Gruene. We get out at Gruene but the Parks and Wildlife website list the next public take out a little further downstream but remember when you enter New Braunfels you have to follow their laws such as the limit on the size of the ice chest you can have with you.
There are four solid rapids on this run. You need to be sure the water is flowing. During the summer, this is sometimes the only river flowing to assure the survival of the rainbow trout. Says Paddler
Recreational releases from Canyon Dam make this beautiful stretch of
river runable year-round. There are numerous springs to warm up in in the winter. Be early in the summer time to beat the party crowd, and enjoy the rapids, scenery, and wildlife before it disappears behind the college kids with their radios, and kegs. Says Ben
The scenic beauty of Comal County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. The put-in location is a short drive from San Antonio, as you can see on the road map further down. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers
here more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are less demanding. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. You can enjoy
this section more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag. The Canyon Dam to Cypress Bend Park section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. Whether
