Canyon Dam to Cypress Bend Park section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III(V) 22 miles
This is a fun river to kayak. Although some parts are very slow open water, there are usually plenty of tubers to keep it interesting. Me and mine really love this ride. The best put in is somewhere around the first crossing right above huaco springs rapids. From there, your next take out is Gruene. We get out at Gruene but the Parks and Wildlife website list the next public take out a little further downstream but remember when you enter New Braunfels you have to follow their laws such as the limit on the size of the ice chest you can have with you.
There are four solid rapids on this run. You need to be sure the water is flowing. During the summer, this is sometimes the only river flowing to assure the survival of the rainbow trout. Says Paddler
Recreational releases from Canyon Dam make this beautiful stretch of
river runable year-round. There are numerous springs to warm up in in the winter. Be early in the summer time to beat the party crowd, and enjoy the rapids, scenery, and wildlife before it disappears behind the college kids with their radios, and kegs. Says Ben
The scenic beauty of Texas and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. The starting location is a short drive from San Antonio, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The Canyon Dam to Cypress Bend Park section of Guadalupe
River is 22 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III(V) section. No need to look hard for hotels, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way
this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Texas are often more forgiving than in other states, so better not forget that
the rivers in this state are less demanding. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. The Canyon Dam to Cypress Bend Park section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack
your camp stove.
