Texas whitewater - James River, Mason County Mason county, FM 385 to FM 2389 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-III     18 miles   It is my understanding that the Star S Ranch is building a game proof/ human fence across the James River. This is about 8 miles above where the James and Llano meet. Says T Osburn The fence that is being constructed by Star S Ranch will not prevent any one from navigating the James River.  There will be a large door which will allow people to portage canoes and kayaks around the fence. The FM 385 to FM 2389 stretch of James River in Texas is 18 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are not so many other good spots for that around here. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. Briefly about the general area: At James River through the summer months   highs are in the 90's. Summer overnight lows dip down to the 60's. Daytime highs during the winter are in the 60's; overnight lows throughout the wintertime for James River tend to be in the 20's.
