The fence that is being constructed by Star S Ranch will not prevent any one from navigating the James River. There will be a large door which will allow people to portage canoes and kayaks around the fence. Says W Scott
It is my understanding that the Star S Ranch is building a game proof/ human fence across the James River. This is about 8 miles above where the James and Llano meet. Says T Osburn
The scenic beauty of Texas and the water flowing gracefully down James River are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This section of
James River is 18 miles long and is a class II-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Texas is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners.
If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. The FM 385 to FM 2389 stretch is the only paddling stretch along James River. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with
not too many other rivers for that.
Briefly about the general area: All through the long summer days at James River highs are usually in the 90's. All through the dark hours of summer temperatures dip down into the 60's. Highs through the winter are commonly in the 60's,
and after the sun is down during the winter temperatures at James River fall into the 20's. James River is pretty waterless commonly; September is when you get the most rain here, and the driest of the months is December.
