Texas whitewater - James River, Mason County Mason county, FM 385 to FM 2389 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-III     18 miles   The fence that is being constructed by Star S Ranch will not prevent any one from navigating the James River. There will be a large door which will allow people to portage canoes and kayaks around the fence. Says W Scott It is my understanding that the Star S Ranch is building a game proof/ human fence across the James River. This is about 8 miles above where the James and Llano meet. Says T Osburn This stretch of James River in Texas is 18 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III section of whitewater. You might     have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you won't find many other paddling places. There are no other stretches to paddle along James River than the FM 385 to FM 2389 stretch. The natural beauty of Texas and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so pack your camp stove. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people. Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at James River frequently tend to be   in the 90's with night lows in the 60's. All through the winter this place gets highs in the 60's while James River overnight low temperatures throughout the wintertime are in the 20's. At James River you don’t see much rain; the month of September is the wettest with most of the rain, and December is when it's the driest.
