Texas whitewater - Lampasas River, Lampasas County
Lampasas
county,
FM 1690 to Rumley section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II+ 5 miles
My family (wife and 3 sons) just kayaked the Lampasas from Stillhouse Hollow to I-35 on 10/25/09. The release from Stillhouse Hollow dam is 1560 cfs. This means the river is about 4 ft high and very swift current. Have to watch for sweepers and strainers. Stay in the middle of the river. No white water, just current. Put in at Chalk Ridge Falls park and take out at I-35 bridge. The takeout is a little tough, but doable. My wife fell out when her kayak hit a log and it took us about 500 yards to recover her boat and get her back in it. Water is
very cold. Need air temp to be 75 plus to be safe here. Would be better with release at 500-1000 cfs. Says Jeff Warren
I just kayaked the Lampasas. I put in at 195 bridge near Florence. I ''paddled all the way to still house lake. For the about the first five miles the
water levels were really low. It took me about five plus hours to make it to the Youngsport bridge. The going was a little tough like I said low water levels really slowed me down. But once you pass Youngsport bridge there was a lot more water. I really didn't have time to soak in the scenery because by that point I was going to be running out of daylight. I was able to make it to my take-out point by 2015, having spent about eight plus hours on this trip. Says FM
I just floated a 25 mile stretch of the Lampasas river from the hwy190 bridge in
kemper to the 195 bridge near florence. It was a very scenic trip but the water levels at this time of year is a little low. All in all it was a good float, but the water could have been a little higher. not too much white water and a lot of downed trees blocking the path. Good
easy float. but like i said, it needs more water to be a better ride. David Johnson, SGT US ARMY Says David Johnson
This stretch of Lampasas River is 5 miles long and has been rated as a class II+ section by American Whitewater. This is the only paddling section along
Lampasas River. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This stretch has has enough mileage, suitable for an afternoon
trip. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are not as
hard as elsewhere. The scenic beauty of Texas and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a pretty small number of paddling places.
Briefly about the general area: From a
precipitation point of view Lampasas River is a pretty typical location; May is when you get the most rain here; the driest of the months is December. At Lampasas River through the warmest time of the year highs are in the 90's, and the overnight is quite chillier of course, usually
in the 70's. Throughout the winter the highs are commonly in the 50's with winter lows in the 30's overnight here at Lampasas River.
We own 45 acres on the Lampasas River which follows the river nearly to the bridge on hwy 190. We have created a camping/river access area that we will rent out. Contact me at robert.luthi@gmail.com if interested.
