Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Texas is often easier than elsewhere, so better not forget that many runs in this state are very easy. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a pretty small number of paddling spots. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The scenic beauty of
Texas and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. This stretch of Rio Grande in Presidio County is 21 miles long and has been rated as a class II+ section by American Whitewater. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend
some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so why not pack your camp stove too.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime brings highs in the 100's to Rio Grande. Summer nighttime lows descend down to the 70's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 60's while Rio Grande nighttime low temperatures all through the winter are in the 30's. Not much rain falls here at Rio Grande; the month of September is the wettest with most of the rain; March on the other hand is the driest.
Rio Grande is right by the Closed Canyon Trail, and if you feel like a little side trip, try Canyon Madera. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Big Bend Ranch State Park Trail.
