The Talley to Solis stretch of Rio Grande in Brewster County is 10 miles long and has been rated as a class II section by American Whitewater. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Talley to Solis section is one of them. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. The natural beauty of Texas and the cool fresh water have people coming here. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short
distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your sleeping bag. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way
there are not so many other good places for that around here. Whitewater paddling here in the Chisos Mountains is a great experience. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are less demanding.
Briefly about the general area: Rio Grande is regularly a rather dry spot; the month of August is the wettest with most of the rain while March is typically the driest month. The Cross Canyon Trail is a great hiking trail in the neighborhood
of Rio Grande; there is a pleasant hiking trail nearby called the Mariscal Canyon Rim Trail. Through the summer highs here at Rio Grande get into the 80's while overnight lows are commonly in the 60's. Highs all through the wintertime are generally in the 50's while Rio Grande nighttime low temperatures during the wintertime are in the 30's. Man, is there lots of fun things to do in the Chisos Mountains.
