The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Texas are often easier than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The scenic beauty of Brewster County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The Rio Grande Village to Stillwell Crossing section of Rio Grande is 23 miles long and has been rated as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. There's
camping available near Rio Grande. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a pretty small number of paddling rivers. Whitewater paddling here in the Chisos Mountains is a great experience. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time
in nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so pack your sleeping bag.
Briefly about the general area: Rio Grande is mostly a pretty dry location; the month with most of the rain is August, and the driest of the months is March. That right there is a load of fun things already but it goes on, the Chisos Mountains has
it all. If the weather is nice here at Rio Grande, you can go for a hike along the Marufa Vega Trail. You might want to pay a visit to Arroyo Venado if you're here at Rio Grande; the Strawhouse Trail is a great hiking trail nearby. At Rio Grande through the summer months highs
are in the 90's. For the period of the moonlight hours it's frequently in the 60's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 60's, and overnight lows through the wintertime for Rio Grande tend to be in the 30's.
