Texas whitewater, Rio Grande

Brewster county, Rio Grande Village to Stillwell Crossing section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS I-II     23 miles
The actual distance from RGV to FM 2726, which is the ONLY legal take-out point on the Boquillas Canyon run, is about 36 miles as measured by my Garmin GPSMap76CSx. The take-out is at Heath Canyon Ranch, and there is a fee of $4.00 per person for accessing their property. Andy Kurie is the owner of HCR. The take-out is just after passing under the Gerstacker Bridge that formerly was the link between Texas and La Linda, Mexico. The bridge was
shut down many years ago by George W. Bush's Department of Homeland Security.

There is only one rapid, and it is a Class I to I+ about a mile from the take-out. A full description can be found on Southwest Paddler
(http://southwestpaddler.com/). Says Marc W. McCord

This section of Rio Grande in Brewster County is 23 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The scenic beauty of Brewster County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. A good workout and just hanging out with mother
nature are great reasons to come. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you donít have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Texas are often easier than in other states, so better not forget that many of the sections in this state are safe for beginners. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. This river system is full of great paddling sections, the Rio Grande Village to Stillwell Crossing section is just one of them. The wild scenery of the Chisos Mountains is great.
