Texas whitewater - San Gabriel River - North Fork, Williamson County Williamson county, L. Georgetown to Georgetown section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II     4 miles   Just made this trip this weekend (9/9/07) and the water is really high and running fast! Lots of trees to navigate and a shorter yak would have been nice (had Tarpon 120's). My wife and I are both 'new' to kayaking and this was just our 3rd trip and was almost more than we bargained for. You could not get all the way to the bottom of the dam to start and had to enter a little farther down. I think it is just more technical right now with the river so high and fast. A lot of tight turns and very small openings through the trees. One thing not mentioned anywhere     here is the 8ft dam drop you have to portage. Beware of that one! Also, maybe 4 other places where the water was over some walkways that created 1-3 foot drops. You can run those or pretty easy to get around them. Enjoy carefully! My 16 year old daughter made her 1st trip with only one incident but you can just stand up and walk away from your boat if necessary. The key is the release of water from the dam. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Texas tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy.   This section of San Gabriel River - North Fork in Williamson County is 4 miles long and has been rated as a class II section by American Whitewater. The campgrounds here at San Gabriel River - North Fork are pretty good. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. The wonderful Williamson County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's perfect for a one day trip. The L. Georgetown to Georgetown stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. Briefly about the general area: A short spree to Georgetown Springs is always worthwhile, and hiking is a popular thing to do around San Gabriel River - North Fork; Good Water Trail is a good local trail. All through the long summer days at San Gabriel River - North Fork highs are mostly in the 90's while nighttime lows are generally in the 70's. Highs during the winter are mostly in the 50's while San Gabriel River - North Fork overnight low temperatures all through the wintertime are in the 30's.
