The nature scenery of Texas and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The FM 170 to Rio Grande section of Terlingua Creek is 16 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II section. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Texas you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so better not forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time
outdoors have people coming from far and near. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you won't find a large number of other rivers. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead
and pack your camping stuff. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
Briefly about the general area: It is very waterless here at Terlingua Creek regularly; most of the rain falls during September, and March is when it's the driest. The Long Draw is a fine place to look at, and on a great day you can take a hike along the Santa Elena Canyon Trail. During the warm days of summer highs here at Terlingua Creek get into the 100's. When the night sets in temperatures
descend down into the 70's. Daytime highs during the winter are in the 60's with temperatures at Terlingua Creek dipping down into the 30's all through winter nights.
