  The wonderful Medina County scenery and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The SH 173 crossings N of Hondo stretch of Verde Creek in Medina County is 7 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. The starting point is not too far from Kerrville, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to
    drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This stretch has has enough mileage, it's perfect for a one day trip. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the SH
173 crossings N of Hondo section is one of them. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Texas are often easier than in other states, so better not forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you won't find a large number of other  
rivers. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.

Briefly about the general area:
A glorious location in the neighborhood of Verde Creek is Vat Hollow, and the Hill Country State Natural Area Trail is a magnificent hiking trail nearby. An average amount of rainfall falls at Verde Creek. May is the month that gets the most rain, and December is the month with the least moisture. Summertime highs at Verde Creek typically tend to be in the 90's. Summer overnight lows dip down to the 70's. All through the wintertime highs are usually in the 60's, and nighttime lows in the 30's for Verde Creek.
