CLASS I-II 27 miles
The Loma to Westwater section of Colorado River in Utah is 27 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Grand Junction, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. A bit of exercise
and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The natural beauty of Grand County and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. If you have the time you can make this a two day
trip, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with not too many other places for that. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too.
Briefly about the general area: It is very arid here at Colorado River generally; most of the rain falls all through October; February is when it's the driest. During the summer months here at Colorado River, high temperatures commonly reach the 90's. Once the sun is down it falls down to the 50's.
During the winter highs are usually in the 30's, and during the dark hours in the wintertime at Colorado River temperatures fall to the 0's. A river like this is too good to miss. Colorado River is right by the Monument Canyon Trail, and Colorado National Monument is a very
great spot to have a look at. If you're here at Colorado River, checking out Pipe Organ is a must, and why not take a refreshing hike along the John Ottos Trail. A cool spot to pop by in the vicinity of Colorado River is Independence Monument, and a wonderful place is Monument Canyon.
