Utah whitewater - Rock Creek, Uinta Mountains, Duchesne County
Duchesne
county,
Upper Stillwater Dam to Route 134 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-V 5 miles
(...) The section is comprised of 3 class 3+/IV- drops with swift braided channels in between. It seldom flows since most water is diverted over to the Wasatch front from the Upper Stillwater Dam (it has to spill to be runnable.) Climatologically speaking, March is actually the month of our highest precipitation (which falls as snow, building the pack which then melts in May/June.) Most people find this section of river not nearly as rewarding as other runs in the state. Says Rob Gadd
The nature scenery of Duchesne County and the beautiful way
the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. This section of Rock Creek is 5 miles long and is a class II-V section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The campgrounds here at Rock Creek are pretty good. Since you're on this site you are
probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is a pretty decent length section, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The Uinta Mountains scenery is wonderful. The Upper Stillwater Dam to Route 134 stretch is the only paddling stretch along Rock
Creek. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Utah tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy.
