San Juan
county,
Sand Island to Mexican Hat section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II 26.5 miles
The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Utah are often more forgiving than in other states, so keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. This stretch of San Juan River in San Juan County is 26.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II section of whitewater. The natural beauty of Utah and the water flowing gracefully down San Juan River have people coming here. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. Great exercise and spending
some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are not so many other good spots for that around here. You might have
to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too.
Briefly about the general area: It's always good to go to Four Foot Rapids. For the duration of the warm months at San Juan River highs are mostly in the 90's while overnight
lows are regularly in the 60's. High temperatures during the winter are normally in the 40's with temperatures at San Juan River dipping down into the 10's through winter nights.
