San Juan
county,
Sand Island to Mexican Hat section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II 26.5 miles
The beautiful scenery of Utah and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. This section of San Juan River in Utah is 26.5 miles long and is a class II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so better not forget that rivers here are less demanding. The Sand Island to Mexican Hat stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance
then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way
there are not so many other good rivers for that around here. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more.
