Sand Island to Mexican Hat section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II 26.5 miles
This stretch of San Juan River in San Juan County is 26.5 miles long and is a class II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The average Utah whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. The Sand Island to Mexican Hat stretch is one of a few paddling stretches
in this river system. The wonderful San Juan County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in
your car. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came.
