  The beautiful scenery of Utah and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The average Utah whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. This stretch of San Juan River is 56 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II(III) section. A section like this is is of course not run in a single day, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have
    to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back
for more. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with not too many other rivers for that. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Mexican Hat to Clay Hills Crossing section is one of them.

Briefly about the general area:
Throughout the warm months at San Juan River temperatures are frequently in the 90's with nighttime lows in the 60's. For the duration of the wintertime this place gets highs in the 40's, and night lows all through the wintertime for San Juan River tend to be in the 20's. The Government Trail
 
offers hiking at its best.
San Juan River is commonly a relatively waterless site; August is the month that gets the most rain, and June is when it's the driest.
