The starting location is a short drive from Rutland, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The Mt. Tabor to Appalachian Trail section of Big Branch in Rutland County is 2.6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class V section. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling places. The nature scenery of Vermont and the water flowing gracefully down Big Branch beats anything. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out
with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. This section is quite short so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Whitewater paddling here in
the Green Mountains is a great experience. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. There are no other sections to paddle along Big Branch than the Mt. Tabor to Appalachian Trail section.

which is a perfect hiking trail, and going for a hike on the Baker Peak Trail is always a delightful adventure. For the duration of the warm months, highs mostly are in the 80's at Big Branch while overnight lows are usually in the 50's. For the duration of the winter highs
are in the 20's; after the sun is down during the winter temperatures at Big Branch fall into the 0's. From a rainfall point of view Big Branch is a reasonably normal site; August is the month that gets the most rain; February on the other hand is the driest.
