If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. The Searsburg Dam to Harriman Reservoir stretch of Deerfield River in Vermont is 4.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III section of whitewater. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Bennington, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking,
either way there are lots of good spots for that around here. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The beautiful scenery of Vermont and the sparkling of
the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. This stretch is mid length, suitable for an afternoon trip. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
Briefly about the general area: Don't leave Deerfield River without first going for a hike along the Deerfield Ridge Trail. High temperatures at Deerfield River through the summer are in the 80's. For the duration of the dark hours
of summer temperatures dip down into the 50's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 30's, and night lows through the winter for Deerfield River tend to be in the 0's. Deerfield River frequently gets much rain; through August this area sees the most rain while February is regularly the driest month. Really great skiing awaits you at Haystack; you could always look at Sleepy Hollow.
