The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Bennington, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. The Searsburg Dam to Harriman Reservoir section of Deerfield River in Windham County is 4.5 miles long and is a class III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Vermont is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. Briefly about the general area: Going for a hike on the Deerfield Ridge Trail is always a great adventure; a day on the slopes of Haystack is just what you need. During the summer at Deerfield River highs are regularly   in the 80's. All through the moonlight hours it's usually in the 50's. Highs through the wintertime are frequently in the 30's, and overnight lows through the winter for Deerfield River tend to be in the 0's.
