Vermont whitewater - Little River, Green Mountains, Washington County
Washington
county,
Waterbury Reservoir to Winooski River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I(III) 2.5 miles
If you're coming from Barre it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so don't forget that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. The scenic beauty of Vermont and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This stretch of Little River in Vermont is 2.5 miles long and has been determined
by American Whitewater to be a class I(III) section. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. A
bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This is a pretty short section so better bring some good walking shoes. The Green Mountains scenery is wonderful.
Briefly about the general area: At Little River all through the summertime highs are in the 60's. Once the sun is down it plunges down to the 50's. The wintertime brings highs
down to the 10's, and overnight lows throughout the winter for Little River tend to be in the 0's. So much cool stuff to do in the Green Mountains, not enough time. Take a hike on the Stevenson Brook Trail, and hiking along the Hedgehop Hill Loop Trail is splendid fun. From
a rain point of view Little River is a pretty normal location; August is when you get the most rain here, and the driest month of the year is February.
