This section of Mad River in Vermont is 2 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III+(V) section by American Whitewater. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Vermont are often easier than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. This section is quite short so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. The scenic beauty of Washington County and the
beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. If you're coming from Barre it's not a long drive
at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The 1st Hydro Dam to Winooski River section is the only paddling section along Mad River. Whitewater paddling here in the Green Mountains is a great experience. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: At Mad River during the days of summer highs are in the 60's, and throughout
the night it cools down to the 50's. Throughout the wintertime the highs are mostly in the 10's, and night lows at Mad River all through the wintertime frequently plunge into the 0's.
