Vermont whitewater - Mad River, Green Mountains, Washington County
Washington
county,
1st Hydro Dam to Winooski River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III+(V) 2 miles
The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Vermont are often more forgiving than in other states, so better not forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. This stretch of Mad River is 2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III+(V) section. The natural beauty of Washington County and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Mad River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the 1st Hydro Dam to Winooski River stretch is the only one. There are nice
comfortable hotels here, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The starting location
is a reasonable drive from Barre, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This is a somewhat short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. The beautiful Green Mountains scenery is an added bonus.
