The natural beauty of Vermont and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. If you're coming from Barre it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The 1st Hydro Dam to Winooski River section of Mad River is 2 miles long and is a class II-III+(V) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. For all you camping people there are campgrounds
nearby. Mad River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the 1st Hydro Dam to Winooski River stretch is the only one. This is a bit of a short stretch so no need to bring snacks. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Vermont tend to be more forgiving than the national average,
so keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. The river winds through the Green Mountains and you get great scenery. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good spots for that around here. There are many good hotels to choose from, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
