Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. The starting location is a short drive from Berlin, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The Victory Bog to Passumpsic River stretch of Moose River in Caledonia / Essex County is 18 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-IV section. This is the only paddling stretch along Moose River. Some people
prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag. The scenic beauty of Vermont and the playfulness of the water beats anything.
When you're paddling down a Green Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: At Moose River through the months of summer highs are in
the 80's. Once the sun is down it plunges down to the 50's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 20's; winter nights come with lows in the 0's to Moose River. These mountains rock, just look at all the entertaining stuff to do in the Green Mountains. Don't leave Moose River
without first going for a hike along the Bear Den Trail; Burke Mountain is a glorious local ski area. The amount of rainfall that falls at Moose River is close to the national average; August is when you get the most rain here while February is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
