The Baldwin Creek to Otter Creek stretch of New Haven River is 13 miles long and has been rated as a class II-IV section by American Whitewater. The nature scenery of Vermont and the water flowing gracefully down New Haven River will make you feel great. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Rutland, as you can see on the road map further down.
Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The Baldwin Creek to Otter Creek section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature
are great attractions for lots of people. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good places. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camp stove.
Briefly about the general area: All through the warm days of summer, highs ordinarily are in the 80's at New Haven River. Throughout the moonlight hours it's typically in the 50's. Through the winter the highs are mostly in the 20's, and after the sun is down all through the wintertime temperatures at New Haven
River sink into the 0's. There's fine hiking along the Beaver Meadow Trail. There's a forest here at New Haven River called Middleblury Municipal Forest, and tremendous hiking is available along the Abbey Pond Trail. From a precipitation point of view New Haven River is a relatively normal location; the month with most of the rain is August; the driest month is February.
