The Baldwin Creek to Otter Creek section of New Haven River in Vermont is 13 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-IV section. The scenic beauty of Addison County and the playfulness of the water have people coming here. The starting point is not too far from Rutland, as you can see on the road map further down. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. There's camping available near New Haven River. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the
river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. If
you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so don't forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere.
Briefly about the general area: High temperatures at New Haven River during the warm days of summer are in the 80's with night lows in the 50's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 20's; after the sun is down all through the wintertime temperatures at New Haven River plunge into the 0's. area sees the most rain; the driest of the months is February. There is a delightful hiking trail in the neighborhood of New Haven River called the Abbey Pond Trail, and a forest close by is Middleblury Municipal Forest. Going for a hike on the Beaver Meadow Trail is always a magnificent adventure.
