The wonderful Vermont scenery and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This stretch of New Haven River in Vermont is 13 miles long and it is classified as a class II-IV section by American Whitewater. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your sleeping bag. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here.
The starting point is not too far from Rutland, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Vermont are easier than the national norm, so better not forget that many runs in this state are very easy.
There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
Briefly about the general area: Middleblury Municipal Forest is a tremendous forest region next to New Haven River, and don't leave New Haven River without first going for a hike along the Beaver Meadow Trail. The yearly rainfall here at New Haven River is about average; through the month of August
you get the most rain around here, and February meanwhile is the driest month. There are brilliant places to discover along the Abbey Pond Trail. For the duration of the months of summer highs here at New Haven River get into the 80's. For the period of the dark hours of summer
temperatures dip down into the 50's. All through the winter this place gets highs in the 20's while the cold winter nights at New Haven River are in the 0's.
