The average Vermont whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so better not forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The scenic beauty of Vermont and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. You might have to
settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. On this section you do get some distance, it's perfect for a one day trip. When you're paddling down a Green Mountains river like
this one you always get great scenery along the way too. The Londonderry rapids stretch of West River in Windham County is 5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of spots for that. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. The starting point is not too far from Bennington, there's
a road map further down the page with more info on that. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well.
Briefly about the general area: Near West River you find the Overlook Trail which is a wonderful hiking trail, and the skiing at
Magic Mountain is pleasant. If you want a pleasant time in the great outdoors just come on up to the Green Mountains. The Hamilton Falls Trail is a great hiking trail in close proximity to West River. West River is a wet location that gets lots of rain; through the month of August
you get the most rain around here while February is commonly the driest month. High temperatures at West River during the summertime months are in the 80's. For the period of the dark hours of summer temperatures sink down into the 50's. Throughout the wintertime highs are typically in the 30's, and night lows in the 10's for West River.
