Salmon Hole to Route 100 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II 3.2 miles
Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Vermont tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so you'd better keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. This stretch of West River in Vermont is 3.2 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II section. If you're coming from Bennington it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. The scenic beauty of Windham County and the water flowing gracefully down West River attract people from near and far. This
is a bit of a short stretch so no need to bring snacks. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. The campgrounds here at West River are pretty good. The Green Mountains scenery is wonderful. No matter if you're whitewater
rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good places. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near.
Briefly about the general area: Go for a hike on the Hamilton Falls Trail; great skiing awaits you at Magic Mountain. So many fun things to do here in the Green Mountains, too great to be true. There are tremendous places to look at along the Overlook
Trail. All the water falling down from the sky makes West River a wet place; the wettest month of the year is usually August, that's the one that rains the most, and February is the month with the least moisture. High temperatures at West River through the summer are in the
80's, and the overnight is rather chillier of course, commonly in the 50's. Throughout the wintertime the highs are generally in the 30's, and after the sun is down throughout the winter temperatures at West River dip into the 10's.
