The Sherando Lake to South River stretch of Back Creek - South River Tributary is 9 miles long and is a class II-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The wonderful Augusta County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. No shortage of good hotels, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels
fill up quick. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Virginia you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are less demanding. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature will make
you glad you came. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Back Creek - South River Tributary doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Sherando Lake to South River stretch is the only one. This stretch is mid length, good for a one day paddling trip. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is an added bonus. If you're coming from Staunton-Waynesboro it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost.
