This section of Barbours Creek in Craig County is 7 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often easier than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. The nature scenery of Virginia and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. The put-in location is a short drive from Roanoke, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get
lost. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. There
are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This is the only paddling section along Barbours Creek. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. On this section you do get some distance, it's good length for a morning trip.
Briefly about the general area: There is a good hiking trail in close proximity to Barbours Creek called the Fenwick Nature Trail. Through the days of summer at Barbours Creek highs are typically in the 80's. All through the dark hours of summer temperatures
drop down into the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's; through the dark hours in the winter at Barbours Creek temperatures drop to the 20's. Barbours Creek gets a normal amount of yearly rain; July is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest of the months is February.
