This section of Big Cedar Creek in Russell County is 9 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-III section. If you're coming from Bristol it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful Virginia scenery and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's good length for a morning trip. There are many good hotels to choose from, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good spots for that around here. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Virginia you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers
here are suitable for beginners. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. This is the only paddling section along Big Cedar Creek.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at Big Cedar Creek commonly tend to be in the 80's; throughout summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. The winter comes with highs in the 40's; after the sun is down all through the wintertime temperatures at Big Cedar Creek descend into the 20's.
The beauty of mother nature reveals herself at Big Falls; close by Glade Hollow is a great place to go. Interesting geology is available here; Pinnacle is right next door to Big Cedar Creek. Big Cedar Creek is a wet place that gets a large amount of precipitation; the wettest month of the year is generally July, that's the one that rains the most, and February is the month with the least moisture.
