Virginia whitewater - Big Reed Island Creek, Blue Ridge Mountains, Carroll County
Carroll
county,
US Route 221 to New River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-III 20 miles
From the road that parallels a few miles of the lower section of Big Reed Island Creek, I think it's Rock Creek Rd. Or Rt. 694 ?? I've viewed some rapids that I think are about 8 miles above the junction with the new River. These rapids appear to be grade III to me, with a lot of large bolders. This appears to be somewhat dangerous to me but I'm a novice kayaker. Any comments about this section or suggestons? Says Darrell Powledge
The nature scenery of Carroll County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream will make
you feel great. The starting point is not too far from Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your
camping stuff. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. When you're paddling down a Blue Ridge Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way
too. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. This
stretch of Big Reed Island Creek is 20 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-III section.
