Virginia whitewater - Big Reed Island Creek, Blue Ridge Mountains, Carroll County
Carroll
county,
US Route 221 to New River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-III 20 miles
From the road that parallels a few miles of the lower section of Big Reed Island Creek, I think it's Rock Creek Rd. Or Rt. 694 ?? I've viewed some rapids that I think are about 8 miles above the junction with the new River. These rapids appear to be grade III to me, with a lot of large bolders. This appears to be somewhat dangerous to me but I'm a novice kayaker. Any comments about this section or suggestons? Says Darrell Powledge
The put-in location is a short drive from Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford, if you're not familiar with the
area there's a road map further down the page. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. This stretch of Big Reed Island
Creek in Virginia is 20 miles long and it is classified as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. The natural beauty of Carroll County and the playfulness of the water beats anything. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your sleeping bag. The wild scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains is great. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the US Route 221 to New River section is one
of them. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots.
