CLASS V+ 4 miles
I have been doing climate research on the High Knob massif, the great landform upon which many of these whitewater runs are listed for in Wise-Scott counties of Virginia, for some 20 years. This is a high precipitation area ( although 2007 has been the driest on record with 40''-46'' so far ) that tends to average 60''-70'' per year amid the mid-upper elevations ( 2500-3000+ feet ) along the Wise-Scott border. The city of Norton has been found to be the wettest town or city in Virginia over the long term, with an annual average during the 1983-2004 period of
57.54'' per year ( and that with some missing data during the winter months prior to 1999 ). Thought you would be interested in this information, since not alot of data is available on this area. Says Wayne Browning
The put-in is not too far from Kingsport-Bristol, as you
can see on the road map further down. The beautiful scenery of Scott County and the water flowing gracefully down Big Stony - Mountain Fork will make you feel great. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good spots for that around here. This is a pretty decent length section, it's good length for a morning trip. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. The Mountain Fork to Chimney Rock Fork section
is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. This stretch of Big Stony - Mountain Fork is 4 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class V+ section. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but do book a room before you come because it is a
very popular destination. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more.
