Virginia whitewater - Big Wilson Creek, Blue Ridge Mountains, Grayson County Grayson county, Close to Mouth of Wilson section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS III-V+     3 miles   This section of Big Wilson Creek is 3 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-V+ section. The nature scenery of Virginia and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is wonderful. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. This is a short paddling stretch so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Virginia tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so     if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Boone, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The campgrounds here at Big Wilson Creek are pretty good. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This is the only paddling stretch along Big Wilson Creek. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. Briefly about the general area: Big Wilson Creek is right by the Bearpen Trail, and do take a hike on the First Peak Trail. The warmest time of the year at Big Wilson Creek comes with high temperatures in the 80's. Through the dark   hours of summer temperatures fall down into the 50's. The winter comes with highs in the 40's; winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Big Wilson Creek. And that's not everything there is to do here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The high level of rain makes Big Wilson Creek a rather wet site; most of the rain falls during July; the driest month of the year is November.
