The Forks of Buffalo to Amherst stretch of Buffalo River in Virginia is 19 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II section. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The wonderful Amherst County scenery and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often     easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so pack your sleeping bag. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good rivers for that around here. The Forks of Buffalo to Amherst stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Briefly about the general area: The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Buffalo River, and the nighttime is a tad cooler of course, mostly in the 60's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 40's with temperatures at Buffalo River dipping down into the 20's during winter nights. There's   brilliant hiking along the Tolley Gap Trail. Buffalo River frequently gets lots of rain; of all the months in a year October is the one with the most rain; the driest of the months is January.
