Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Virginia is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. If you're coming from Lynchburg it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. The Forks of Buffalo to Amherst section of Buffalo River in Virginia is 19 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II section. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so why not pack your camping stuff
too. The wonderful Virginia scenery and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular
destination. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come.
Briefly about the general area: During the months of summer here at Buffalo River, high temperatures mostly reach the 80's. Summer night lows fall down to the 60's. For the duration of the wintertime this place gets highs in the 40's with temperatures at Buffalo River dipping down into the 20's during winter
nights. The Tolley Gap Trail offers hiking at its best. Buffalo River regularly gets much rain; the month with most of the rain is October, and January meanwhile is the driest month.
