The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Lynchburg, as you can see on the road map further down. The Forks of Buffalo to Amherst section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. There's camping available near Buffalo River. A good workout and a chance to spend some time     outdoors will have you coming back for more. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your camping stuff. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling rivers. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The Forks of Buffalo to Amherst stretch of Buffalo River in Amherst County is 19 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II section of whitewater. Briefly about the general area: Buffalo River is a pretty wet place typically with lots of precipitation; October is when you get the most rain here; January is when it's the driest. Good hiking is available along the Tolley Gap Trail. The warmest time of the year at Buffalo River arrives   with high temperatures in the 80's with overnight lows in the 60's. High temperatures throughout the winter are normally in the 40's; during the dark hours in the wintertime at Buffalo River temperatures plunge to the 20's.
