The Amherst to Tye River stretch of Buffalo River in Amherst County is 13 miles long and has been rated as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. The natural beauty of Amherst County and the water flowing gracefully down Buffalo River beats anything. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back
for more. The starting point is not too far from Lynchburg, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want
to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so pack your camp stove.
