The Route 692 to Route 687 section of Calfpasture River in Virginia is 8 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Virginia tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are less demanding. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Since you're on this
site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling spots. On this section you do get some distance, suitable for an afternoon trip. The put-in is not too far from Staunton-Waynesboro, there's a road map further down the
page with more info on that. The beautiful scenery of Virginia and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: Calfpasture River sees pretty high levels of rainfall; July is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest month is December. The Walker Mountain Trail is a perfect hiking trail right next door to Calfpasture River; Fox Hollow is another glorious site to visit nearby. The surroundings of this river have so much to offer.
There is a good hiking trail near Calfpasture River called the Shenandoah Mountain Trail, and the Walker Mountain casts its shadow over Calfpasture River. The warmest time of the year at Calfpasture River comes with high temperatures in the 80's, and all through the night it cools
down to the 50's. High temperatures all through the winter are normally in the 30's; nighttime lows at Calfpasture River through the winter ordinarily dip into the 10's.
