This section of Calfpasture River in Augusta/Rockbridge County is 4 miles long and it is classified as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. The natural beauty of Augusta/Rockbridge County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. If you're coming from Staunton-Waynesboro it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds
nearby. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, good for a one day paddling trip. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this
general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often easier than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy.
Briefly about the general area: Near Calfpasture River you come across the Missing Link Trail which is a tremendous hiking trail, and a wonderful
spot to check out is Chambers Hollow. Summer at Calfpasture River comes with high temperatures in the 80's with night lows in the 50's. High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 30's with temperatures at Calfpasture River dipping down into the 10's throughout winter
nights. Calfpasture River is a relatively wet place mostly with a large amount of precipitation; through July this area sees the most rain, and December is when it's the driest. Going for a hike on the Old Bridge Trail is always a great adventure.
