The wonderful Virginia scenery and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Roanoke, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is an added bonus. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up
quick. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling places. This stretch of Catawba Creek in Virginia is 12 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-III
section of whitewater. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. This is the only paddling section along Catawba Creek. The average Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy.
