The wonderful Botetourt County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Catawba Creek attract people from near and far. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Virginia you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The starting point is not too far from
Roanoke, as you can see on the road map further down. There's camping available near Catawba Creek. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. There are no other sections to paddle along Catawba Creek than the
Fincastle to James River section. Whitewater paddling here in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great experience. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. This section of Catawba Creek in Botetourt County is 12 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-III section. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near.
