Virginia whitewater - Cedar Creek, Shenandoah / Frederick County
Shenandoah / Frederick
county,
Above Route 55 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II 9 miles
My wife & I canoed this in March of 1986. What I remember, we would go into these curves & it was the most beautiful green pools of clear water. You could see to the bottom. There was a low-water bridge that we had to carry the canoe over. We floated on downstream & just before dark we pulled over to camp. Where we camped was a couple of miles above the waterfall on river left. We had a little party & had taken a little 5 TV & watched David Letterman. The next morning we canoed past the waterfall, past a suspension bridge, paddled several easy class II
rapids, & I think we took out at the bridge that was about 3 miles above the Shenandoah River. There was a beautiful old white farmhouse on river right. In summary, Cedar Creek in the upper part has decent current, beautiful pools, flowing through rolling farmland & transitions
to microgorges. We have moved to another state & miss doing this trip. Says Big Dog
The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. The Above Route 55 stretch of Cedar Creek in Virginia is 9 miles long and has been rated as a class II section by American Whitewater. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds
nearby. The put-in location is a short drive from Winchester, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The beautiful scenery of Shenandoah / Frederick County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here
and paddle. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. This is a pretty decent length section, it's good length for a morning trip. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill
up quick.
