The nature scenery of Carroll County and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. The Route 721 to Byllesby Dam on New River stretch of Chestnut Creek is 11.5 miles long and it is classified as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. There are some good hotels near the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The Route 721 to Byllesby Dam on New River stretch is the only
paddling stretch along Chestnut Creek. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of places for that. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other states, so if you're visiting
here do keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The put-in is not too far from Mount Airy, as you can see on the road map further down. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is an added bonus. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your sleeping bag.
