The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other states, so keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The scenic beauty of Virginia and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This stretch of Clear Creek in Wise County is 0.75 miles
long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV+ section. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is an added bonus. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. There are no other sections to paddle along
Clear Creek than the Clear Creek Gorge section. This is an extremely short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over.
Briefly about the general area: Clear Creek gets a normal amount of rainfall; most of the rain falls all through July while January is the month with the least amount of precipitation. High temperatures at Clear Creek throughout the months of summer are in the 80's. For the duration of the dark hours of summer temperatures descend down into the 50's. Daytime highs through the winter are in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Clear Creek are in the 10's.
