The natural beauty of Alleghany/Botetourt County and the cool fresh water have people coming here. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. The Shaw Fork to Route 625 bridge section of Cowpasture River in Virginia is 24.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-III section. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of
people coming here. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if
you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. There's camping available near Cowpasture River.
Briefly about the general area: Cowpasture River is right by the Jerkemtight Trail, and a magnificent spot to stop at nearby is Barracks Draft. Cowpasture River sees pretty high levels of rain; most of the rain falls during July,
and the driest month of the year is December. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Marshall Draft Trail; you need to check out Byrd Point since you're here. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Cowpasture River while night lows are regularly in the 50's.
Through the winter highs are in the 30's, and nighttime lows at Cowpasture River during the wintertime mostly descend into the 10's. This river is a great place to visit.
