Virginia whitewater - Cowpasture River, Botetourt County Botetourt county, Griffith to James River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     13.5 miles   The Griffith to James River section of Cowpasture River is 13.5 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Virginia are easier than the national norm, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Griffith to James River section is one of them. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your sleeping bag. There are     campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The beautiful scenery of Botetourt County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Briefly about the general area: Take a hike on the Brushy Hollow Trail, and hiking along the Beards Gap Trail is wonderful fun. Summertime highs at Cowpasture River usually tend to be in the 80's with night lows in the 50's. The cold days of the winter come   with highs in the 30's while the cold winter nights at Cowpasture River are in the 10's. Cowpasture River is a wet place that gets a great deal of rain; of all the months in a year July is the one with the most rain while December is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
