Virginia whitewater - Craig Creek, Blue Ridge Mountains, Craig County
Craig
county,
Old Route 311 bridge to New Castle section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-II 7 miles
The starting location is a reasonable drive from Roanoke, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This section of Craig Creek is 7 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Craig Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Old Route 311 bridge to New Castle section is the only one. This stretch is
mid length, it's perfect for a one day trip. The beautiful scenery of Craig County and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great. When you're paddling down a Blue Ridge Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. You might be into whitewater
rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good places for that around here. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more.
Briefly about the general area: Good hiking is available along the North Mountain Trail, and Meadow Creek Falls is always fun to check out. The amount of rain that falls at Craig Creek is close to the
