Virginia whitewater - Craig Creek, Blue Ridge Mountains, Craig County

Craig county, Old Route 311 bridge to New Castle section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS I-II     7 miles

I've never kayaked this stretch of Craig's Creek, but it is not the ONLY stretch by far!  We spent 10 days in a lovely VRBO.com riverfront vacation rental downstream from New Castle, and kayaked both up and down the river multiple times, even though the area was in the middle of a bad drought.  We will be renting in Roaring Run this year, which is according to the owner kayakable for the 5 miles to where it meets the James River.  There is a very nice pull out/picnic spot where the two meet, and plenty of room to park.  Take time out to splash around
as well.  I've never seen a river this clean before! Says Julie

No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. The beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great plus for this river. There are no other stretches to paddle along Craig Creek than the Old Route 311 bridge to New Castle stretch. The average Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so better not forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, good for a one day paddling trip. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.
