Virginia whitewater - Craig Creek, Blue Ridge Mountains, Craig County
Craig
county,
Old Route 311 bridge to New Castle section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-II 7 miles
I've never kayaked this stretch of Craig's Creek, but it is not the ONLY stretch by far! We spent 10 days in a lovely VRBO.com riverfront vacation rental downstream from New Castle, and kayaked both up and down the river multiple times, even though the area was in the middle of a bad drought. We will be renting in Roaring Run this year, which is according to the owner kayakable for the 5 miles to where it meets the James River. There is a very nice pull out/picnic spot where the two meet, and plenty of room to park. Take time out to splash around
as well. I've never seen a river this clean before! Says Julie

Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Virginia is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many runs
in this state are very easy. The put-in is not too far from Roanoke, as you can see on the road map further down. The Old Route 311 bridge to New Castle stretch of Craig Creek is 7 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Getting a
good workout and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. You might be into whitewater
rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of places for that. There's camping available near Craig Creek. The beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great plus for this river. The natural beauty of Craig County and the beautiful way the water current
moves down the stream beats anything. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. There are no other sections to paddle along Craig Creek than the Old Route 311 bridge to New Castle section.
Briefly about the general area: Going for a hike
on the Dragon Tooth Trail is always a splendid adventure, and a trip to Meadow Creek Falls will fill your spirit with delightful feelings. But wait, there's more enjoyable things to do in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Near Craig Creek you hit upon the North Mountain Trail which is
a great hiking trail. From a precipitation point of view Craig Creek is a pretty normal site; during the month of July you get the most rain around here; February is when it's the driest. Throughout the months of summer here at Craig Creek, high temperatures ordinarily get
into the 80's; during summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 30's while Craig Creek nighttime low temperatures through the winter are in the 10's.
