The Route 650 to New River stretch of Elk Creek is 4.5 miles long and it is classified as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. The natural beauty of Grayson County and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so don't forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling spots. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to
one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The Route 650 to New River section is the only paddling section along Elk Creek. The put-in location is a short drive from North Wilkesboro, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map
further down the page. On this section you do get some distance, it's perfect for a one day trip. Whitewater paddling here in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great experience. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at Elk Creek commonly tend to be in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures sink down into the 50's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's, and through the
dark hours in the winter at Elk Creek temperatures dip to the 10's. There's brilliant hiking along the Bournes Branch Trail. The amount of rainfall that falls at Elk Creek is close to the national average; July is the wettest month with most rain while January is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
