Virginia whitewater - Elk Creek, Blue Ridge Mountains, Grayson County
Grayson
county,
Route 650 to New River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-III 4.5 miles
The beautiful scenery of Virginia and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This section of Elk Creek is 4.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-III section. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The starting location is a reasonable drive from North Wilkesboro, as you can see on the road map further down. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that
rivers here are less demanding. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Elk Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Route 650 to New River
section is the only one. The river winds through the Blue Ridge Mountains and you get great scenery. This stretch is mid length, suitable for an afternoon trip. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers.
