CLASS I-III 4.5 miles
The starting point is not too far from North Wilkesboro, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The natural beauty of Grayson County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The Route 650 to New River section of Elk Creek is 4.5 miles long and it is classified as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you came. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby.
On this section you do get some distance, suitable for an afternoon trip. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of places for that. The wild scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains is great. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from
the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The average Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. This is the only paddling stretch along Elk Creek.
Briefly about the general area: The annual rainfall here at Elk Creek is about average; during July this area sees the most rain, and January meanwhile is the driest month. If the weather is good
here at Elk Creek, you can go for a hike along the Bournes Branch Trail, and on a magnificent day you can take a hike along the Yellow Branch Trail. All through the warm days of summer at Elk Creek highs are usually in the 80's. Summer overnight lows plunge down to the 50's.
The winter comes with highs in the 40's, and winter nights come with lows in the 10's to Elk Creek. And if that's not enough there's a lot more fun stuff to do in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
