The scenic beauty of Warren County and the water flowing gracefully down Gooney Run make the trip here worthwhile. The put-in location is a short drive from Winchester, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so you'd better keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This stretch is mid length, it's good length for a morning trip. Getting some good
exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. There are no other stretches to paddle along Gooney Run than
the Browntown to Karo Landing stretch. This section of Gooney Run in Warren County is 4.1 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV+ section of whitewater. The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is wonderful. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places.
Briefly about the general area: Going for a hike on the Dickey Hill Trail is always a great adventure, and there are brilliant sites to look at along the Gimlet Ridge Trail. A typical amount of precipitation
falls here at Gooney Run; the month with most of the rain is July; February is the month with the least moisture. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Gooney Run. Through the dark hours of summer temperatures fall down into the 50's. For the period of the
winter highs are in the 40's, and overnight lows in the 10's for Gooney Run. Now, you may imagine that's a lot but there's even more enjoyable stuff to do here in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
