Virginia whitewater - Hardware River, Fluvanna County Fluvanna county, Temperance Wayside to James River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     12 miles   This section of Hardware River in Virginia is 12 miles long and has been rated as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. The wonderful Virginia scenery and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the Temperance Wayside to James River section is one of them. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people. If you hurry you can run this section     in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your camping stuff. If you're coming from Charlottesville it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The average Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. Briefly about the general area: High temperatures at Hardware River all through the summer months are in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures sink down into the 60's. High temperatures during the winter are normally in the 40's with temperatures   at Hardware River dipping down into the 20's all through winter nights. Don't leave Hardware River without first checking out Muleshoe Bend. The high level of precipitation makes Hardware River a reasonably wet location; through May this area sees the most rain; January is the month with the least moisture.
