The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often easier than in other states, so keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. The Damascus to Alvarado section of Holston River - South Fork is 8 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-III     section. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling spots. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The beautiful scenery of Virginia and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Briefly about the general area: Cedar Bluff Hollow is a splendid place to pop by close by, and if you're here you can take a hike along the Maple Spring Fire Trail. Holston River - South Fork gets much water; most of the rain falls through July, and February on the other hand is the   driest.
