Virginia whitewater - Hughes River and Hazel River, Rappahannock/Culpepper County Rappahannock/Culpepper county, SR 603 to Route 522 Bridge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II     9.5 miles   If you are paddling the hazel this is a heads up when taking out at the low water bridge on monument mills road. The property owners there are real not so friendly. They think they own the river itself. Just a heads up. Says Kit Johnston If you've been whitewater rafting     and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The natural beauty of Rappahannock/Culpepper County and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling rivers. The SR 603 to Route 522 Bridge stretch is the only paddling stretch along Hughes River and Hazel River. This stretch of Hughes River and Hazel River in Virginia is 9.5 miles long and is a class II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater.   This stretch has has enough mileage, it's perfect for a one day trip. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. Briefly about the general area: From a rain point of view Hughes River and Hazel River is a rather typical place; of all the months in a year July is the one with the most rain, and the driest of the months is February. For the duration of the long summer days at Hughes River and Hazel River temperatures are generally in the 80's; the night is quite colder of course, commonly in the 60's. All through the winter highs are in the 40's while Hughes River and Hazel River night low temperatures during the wintertime are in the 20's.
