This section of James River in Virginia is 16.5 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so don't forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or
kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good places. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is
wonderful. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Route 43 to Route 630 section is one of them. If you're coming from Roanoke it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The natural beauty of Virginia and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff.

During the summertime, highs frequently are in the 80's at James River while nighttime lows are regularly in the 60's. For the period of the winter the highs are regularly in the 40's, and night lows in the 20's for James River. James River is a good place of common rain; July is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest month is February.
