Virginia whitewater - James River, Amherst/ Bedford County Amherst/ Bedford county, Snowdon to Six Mile section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     29 miles   The wonderful Virginia scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Lynchburg, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good rivers for that around     here. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. The campgrounds here at James River are pretty good. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. This stretch of James River in Amherst/ Bedford County is 29 miles long and has been rated as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. Briefly about the general area: From a rain point of view James River is a pretty typical place; the wettest month of the year is generally July, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month is January. For the period of the long summer days highs here at James River reach the 80's. Through the dark   hours of summer temperatures descend down into the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's, and after the sun is down during the wintertime temperatures at James River dip into the 20's.
