Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Virginia tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. The put-in location is a short drive from Lynchburg, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This stretch of James River in Amherst/ Bedford County is 29 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater     as a class I-II section. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Briefly about the general area: For the duration of the long summer days, highs ordinarily are in the 80's at James River with night lows in the 60's. High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 40's, and after the sun is down   throughout the wintertime temperatures at James River descend into the 20's.
