CLASS I-II 5 miles
This stretch of James River is 5 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Richmond, as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful Virginia scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often easier than in other states, so don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. For all you camping people there are
campgrounds nearby. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Pony Pasture Park to Reedy Creek section is one of them. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Getting
some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with not too many other spots for that. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's good length for a morning trip.
Briefly about the general area: The warmest time of the year at James River arrives with high temperatures in the 80's, and the night is quite chillier of course, regularly in the 60's. For the duration of the wintertime this place gets highs in the 40's,
and overnight lows in the 20's for James River. You'll meet a lot of folks from Richmond here. James River is a reasonably wet place commonly with a good deal of precipitation; August is when you get the most rain here while April is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
