  The natural beauty of Virginia and the playfulness of the water have people coming here. The put-in location is a short drive from Richmond, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Virginia is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers in this state are not as hard as elsewhere. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors
    are great attractions for lots of people. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Reedy Creek to Mayo Island section is one of them. No need to look hard for hotels, but you'd better reserve in advance
because these hotels fill up quick. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here. This section is quite short so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. The Reedy Creek to Mayo Island section of James River is 2.5 miles long and is a class III-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater.

This is a popular
 
place for people from Richmond, and Pocahontas State Park is worth visiting. Lots of precipitation falls at James River. The wettest month of the year is frequently August, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month is April. Through the summer at James River highs are generally in the 80's, and the night is a bit cooler of course, usually in the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's, and winter nights come with lows in the 20's to James River.
