If you're coming from Boone it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. The beautiful scenery of Washington County and the water flowing gracefully down Laurel Creek attract people from near and far. The Damascus to South Fork of Holston River stretch of Laurel Creek
in Virginia is 2.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-III section. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Getting some good exercise and just being out
on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good spots for that around here. There are no other sections to paddle along Laurel Creek than the Damascus to South Fork of Holston River section. This is a bit of a short stretch so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch.
Briefly about the general area: All the water falling down from the
sky makes Laurel Creek a wet place; of all the months in a year July is the one with the most rain; February is the month with the least moisture. At Laurel Creek all through the summertime highs are in the 80's with overnight lows in the 60's. For the duration of the winter highs
are in the 40's; all through the dark hours in the winter at Laurel Creek temperatures dip to the 20's. Fisher Hollow is right next door to Laurel Creek and is unquestionably a nice spot to visit; there is a brilliant hiking trail close by called the Clark Mountain Trail.
